Alexander Calder

<Calder on paper>

October 24, 2019

K Museum of Contemporary Art (KMCA) is proud to present Alexander Calder’s retrospective exhibition, <Calder on paper>. The museum has coordinated with Comediarting to organize this tremendous event and unlike any previous shows, <Calder on paper> will showcase its finest private collections. KMCA has brought over <Calder on Paper> from the Saatchi Gallery as it was a circulating exhibition. However, with the generous participation of private collectors, we were able to further expand the number of artworks more than 150 pieces. Also the collective date for the artworks spans further than any exhibition has sought, which bumps this exhibition as the first-ever largest retrospective exhibition of Calder in all of Asia. The exhibition will feature over 150 pieces of Calder’s gouaches and paintings spreading from 1920 to 1976.

It is with confidence that this exhibition will give the spellbound audience a good soaking as the collection’s focus is concentrated on the gouache and ink works. The collection exudes visual attractions through its primary palette, and the works are of unapologetic boldness and playfulness and it can be promised that you will never want to miss out on this exhibition. It will be held at the KMCA on December 13th, 2019 – April 12th, 2020 with a VIP Opening Reception from 7pm to 9pm on December 12th.

As Calder is one of the prominent figures and members of the avant-garde, his artistic oeuvre becomes the overwhelming unification of life and art. As KMCA will highlight the importance of the educational purpose of his intellectual universality through his works on paper, we hope that the essence of his work will be becoming to the Asian population and cultural heritage.

Duchamp, Mondrian, Marcel, Matisse, and Miró were champions in collectively contributing to Calder and his world of art. KMCA will recreate Calder’s studio along with Piet Mondrian’s studio to invite the audience into the mind of the Artist: a sensational experience that goes far beyond mere visual appreciation. In addition, there will also be a designated area where the audience will be able to participate in the making of these studio mobiles. Visitors will learn the richness of colors, line, and surfaces, then the larger theme of surrealism and abstraction.

The presence of this incredible exhibition gives audiences a glimpse into the great flow of contemporary art history in the 1900s, and gives them a chance to learn, explore and appreciate Calder's artistic legacy and his work. We realize that this show will work wonders and we sincerely hope that everybody will seize this opportunity, as he said “above all, art should be fun”.
